about marcel reyes-cortez

Reyes-Cortez.uk was a very interesting project for us in view of the responsible role that the website plays – a personal website and a portfolio combined with the function of a website for international academic events.

Marcel Reyes-Cortez is a visual anthropologist and photographer working in the field of academic research. His doctoral research (2007-10) at London’s University of Visual Anthropology University studies the application of photography as a method of scientific evidence and academic research.

Marcel also organized Photography+(Con)Text - the conference enabled the collaboration between social researchers and practicing photographers and artists in that field. The first international conference ‘Photography and Academic Research’ was held in September 2016 at University College of London, with the participation of Birkbeck’s Department of Politics and the Royal Anthropological Institute.

Our mission in the conference, which brought together more than 350 participants from the scientific community, photographers and artists, was to promote the organization and to produce materials for it, including Facebook marketing, posters, invitations, a program, web pages for the events. A large number of guests from different backgrounds (and the diversity of events) required materials that are clearly legible, well structured, following a common idea and visual approach. At the same time, they had to visualize the ideas and work of Marcel Reyes-Cortez.

WEB DESIGN

The goal of our work on the website included creating a portfolio of the academic publications and projects as well as publishing the photographs and research made during Marcel’s travels. Since the main idea of the website is to properly present information and photos, we decided to avoid burdening the design with additional visual accents.

To highlight his work as a photographer and to allow the reader to perceive clearly the message of the texts, we built a clean design with a clear structure and delicate but definitive elements. We relied on consistency in building a user-friendly interface. Most of the photographs are black and white so we added colors to follow and support the visual idea of the images.

All of the materials for the conferences and the design of the website are based on the concept of building a unified vision, suitable for presenting the diverse work of the author.
